louder
than god

A speculative quantum model for self absorption. Not literal quantum psychology. A visual and mathematical vocabulary for asking what happens when attention becomes concentrated around the self: possibility, measurement, entanglement, amplification, feedback and collapse.

primary field statement

vanity does not simply increase the value of the self. it changes the probability distribution of everything encountered by the self.

Ψself = Σ ci|selfi
speculative state-vector metaphor / multiple possible self states

01 / quantum vocabulary

field definitions
001 / superposition

many selves / one body

Before attention fixes the presentation, many possible versions of the self can coexist. Beautiful. Ordinary. Desired. Untouchable. Brilliant. Forgotten. Powerful. Vulnerable. Vanity increases the amplitude of the states that feel exceptional. The internal image becomes less like a possibility and more like a preferred reality.

002 / measurement

attention collapses possibility

A mirror measures. A camera measures. An audience measures. Another person's gaze measures. The measurement does not simply reveal the self. It produces a selected presentation of the self. Vanity becomes fascinated with the instant where infinite possibility appears to become one definite image.

003 / observer effect

watching changes the performance

In quantum mechanics, measurement affects the system being measured. As a metaphor for vanity, self observation creates the same conceptual tension. The person notices themselves noticing themselves. Pose changes. Voice changes. Taste changes. Behavior becomes optimized for the imagined observer. The object being observed is simultaneously becoming the performer.

004 / entanglement

other people enter the equation

The self image does not exist in isolation. Admiration, rejection, jealousy, fascination and indifference become linked to it. The response of another person begins to feel like information about the self itself. Vanity creates an imagined entanglement between identity and audience response.

005 / amplitude

attention makes states louder

A probability amplitude describes the contribution of a possible quantum state. Here it becomes a metaphor for attention. The more intensely one rehearses an identity, the more psychologically probable that identity begins to feel. Attention becomes amplification. Amplification becomes conviction.

006 / decoherence

reality introduces noise

A fantasy of absolute centrality cannot remain perfectly isolated. Reality introduces interference. Someone ignores the performance. Someone else receives attention. A desired outcome does not happen. The preferred self state loses coherence. Wrath can appear when contradiction is interpreted as an attack rather than ordinary information.

Possibility becomes observation. Observation becomes selection. Selection becomes performance. Performance generates new observations. The circuit begins feeding itself.

02 / amplification circuit

self reinforcement
SELF A possible identity enters the field.
IMAGE The identity becomes visualized.
ATTENTION Attention increases its amplitude.
PERFORMANCE Behavior begins matching the image.
FEEDBACK The result becomes evidence for the identity.
Aself → Aself + ΔA
metaphor / observation modifies the state being observed

03 / the hard limit

maximum self absorption
007 / centrality

everything becomes signal

The extreme vanity state begins when ordinary events are interpreted primarily through their relation to the self. A room becomes a stage. An object becomes evidence. A stranger's expression becomes information. Silence becomes a measurement. The environment starts appearing to orbit the person because the person's attention has begun orbiting itself.

008 / competing centers

another signal appears

Other people possess independent fields of desire, attention and identity. They cannot be reduced to mirrors. When the self expects universal centrality, another person's independence can feel disproportionately destabilizing. The system encounters another center.

009 / collision

the field resists

The world does not continuously return the preferred measurement. Reality contains randomness, other people's agency and outcomes that were never encoded into the fantasy. The contradiction creates pressure between the preferred state and the observed state.

010 / wrath

signal becomes distortion

Wrath enters when contradiction is experienced as intolerable. The emotional impulse is to restore the expected state by force. The useful insight is not that destruction should occur, but that extreme vanity contains destructive potential precisely because it wants reality to confirm an internal measurement.

wrath = failed measurement

In this model, wrath is the moment the internal prediction and the external measurement disagree so violently that the disagreement itself becomes intolerable. The fantasy says: this should confirm me. Reality says: not necessarily. Vanity wants amplification. Reality contains noise. Wrath is the distortion produced when the system cannot tolerate the noise.

the self
becomes
the signal

The erotic charge of absolute self absorption is the fantasy of becoming maximally concentrated. Not simply being admired, but experiencing the world as if attention itself were energy and the self were its brightest source. Quantum language supplies the metaphor of states, probabilities and observation. Hard rock supplies the physical language: amplification, feedback, vibration, distortion, heat, volume and overload.
