THE FIRST WINTER
OF
ANGELINE

A legend carried farther than memory

The Child

Long before the stories of lonely cabins and whispered curses, there was only a girl whose earliest years have nearly vanished from history. Tradition says Angeline Tubbs was born in England around the year 1761. The records fade quickly after her birth, leaving behind little more than names, fragments, and later recollections.

The silence surrounding her childhood became fertile ground for storytellers. Each generation imagined different beginnings, weaving mystery where certainty could no longer survive.

The Crossing

According to later legend, Angeline became engaged while still very young to an officer serving with the British Army. When war carried him across the Atlantic, she followed, believing her future waited on distant shores.

Whether this happened exactly as told can no longer be known. The tale survives because it explains how a young English woman became part of the landscape around Saratoga, where history and folklore eventually merged into one.

"They say every legend begins with an ordinary child whose true story was forgotten before anyone thought to preserve it."

The Long Silence

Historians agree that very little contemporary evidence survives describing Angeline's earliest life. Most accounts of her childhood appeared decades after the events they claimed to describe. Because of this, no one can confidently separate memory from invention.

The mystery itself became part of her identity. Missing pages often inspire longer stories than complete books.

The Beginning Of The Legend

By the nineteenth century, writers transformed Angeline Tubbs into the mysterious Witch of Saratoga. Her childhood was no longer remembered as a sequence of ordinary days but as the opening chapter of a legend shaped by folklore, local tradition, and imagination.

Whatever her real beginnings may have been, they remain hidden behind the veil that separates documented history from enduring legend.
